Oral Care Concerns for Seniors
As our bodies age, we develop different needs in order to maintain positive health and well-being. Part of this involves taking care of our dental health. Because of aging, seniors may develop unique oral care concerns. Some typical problems that we see in elderly patients are described below.
- Gum disease: Gum disease is an infection and inflammation of the tissues surrounding your teeth. It causes sensitivity in your gums and may make them bleed and can also lead to tooth loss. Gum disease can be managed with cleaning, medication, and/or surgical treatment.
- Root decay: Root decay, also known as “root caries” occurs when a cavity forms on the roots of your teeth. Prevention is the best medicine for root decay, although root canal therapy can also be used to treat the condition.
- Dry mouth: Dry mouth occurs when there is a reduced flow of saliva. It can be caused by medication, cancer treatments, and other factors. Dry mouth can be treated with changes to your diet and habits or with medication.
